20/02/2024 - No end in sight to Sayers Common sewage misery

Last Friday Southern Water experts met Sayers Common residents to explain what is being done to prevent future sewage overflows in the village.

Southern Water explained the causes of the overflows are still under investigation. But it will take time to identify all the causes and solutions. As residents already know the problems tend to occur when there is excess ground water that leaks into the sewage system. And ground water drainage is an issue that involves Southern Water working with local highways to find solutions.

Besides residents the Village Society invited representatives from all the major political parties to the meeting. Both the Labour Party and Conservative Party attended to listen to the views of residents and Southern Water. What was most encouraging for all was Southern Water's commitment to improve communication.

In future Southern Water will give a progress report to Hurstpierpoint Parish Council on a regular, monthly basis. The Parish Council will give details to residents through either its monthly magazine, or leaflets sent out by Southern.

It's now up to Southern Water to demonstrate they are taking action. Mid Sussex Labour Party joins with Sayers Common residents in wanting to ensure Southern Water is held to account for this unhealthy and distressing problem.
