25/11/2021 - Press Release - Recycling Centre Booking Consultation

West Sussex County Council have been trialling a booking system at 6 Recycling Centres across West Sussex, meaning that you have to book an appointment to take your rubbish to your local Recycling Centre.

West Sussex County Council are considering keeping the booking system on a permanent basis and extending to other sites, so it now looks like “Book to Recycle” could be coming to Burgess Hill and East Grinstead.

Friends and colleagues in Crawley say the system is deeply unpopular and has become one of the main topics at councillors’ surgery’s, it’s difficult to alter bookings, there are limits on how many visits can be made during a week – difficult if you have a small car, it could take 2 or 3 visits to clear a garage or get rid of garden waste.

Use of sites with the booking system has decreased, while use of sites without the booking system has increased causing longer queuing times at those sites – and longer car journeys.

There has also been an increase in fly tipping, and in some instances on street bins have had to be removed due to tip-suitable waste being left there.

Despite all of the above West Sussex County Council have declared the trial a roaring success!

West Sussex County Council has opened a public consultation which runs until midnight on 21st December 2021. Available on the yourvoice.westsussex.gov.uk website.

I would urge local residents to have their say by completing the questionnaire.
