19/07/2020 - Gender Recognition Act – Right to Self-Identify
The CLP EC meeting agreed the attached letter to be sent to Sir Keir Starmer.
Dear Sir Keir Starmer,
Gender Recognition Act – Right to Self-Identify
I write to you on behalf of the members for Mid Sussex CLP, which include over 800 people who identify themselves as either female, male, transgender or non-binary. We would like to raise with you concerns our members have in regard to recent news reports surrounding the Conservative Government’s plans for the Gender Recognition Act (GRA) and the Equality Act.
Our CLP is thankful to have a leader that is a proponent of reforming the GRA to make it easier for transgender and non-binary people to have accurate official documents (i.e., birth certificates). We are proud that in our last conference, South East Region Labour Party declared that denying a person recognition for their self-declared gender, including being of no gender, is abusive, oppressive and discriminatory. We demanded that trans and non-binary people must have equal access with people of other genders to participate in society.
Our members believe that the Parliamentary Labour Party (PLP) ought to vote against any motion put forward in the House of Commons which seeks to amend the GRA if it does not introduce the right for individuals to self-identify their own gender. Furthermore, we believe that any proposed change to the Equalities Act and the associated guidance should be opposed if the effect is to exclude transgender and non-binary people.
These beliefs are asserted in order to assist the PLP when deciding how to vote on these matters. Our collective pride for our transgender and non-binary members is unyielding and we hope that when we march for accurate official documents you will be there beside us. Please note that any response to this letter will be circulated to our members, who are eager to hear from you.
We look forward to hearing from you.
Secretary, Mid Sussex CLP
